Nearing mid-summer, the rush is on to get into the garden and the orchard and pick, pull and sort through all of the fruits and vegetables. Cindy enjoys the quiet morning with Dol and Notley in tow. Peppers, tomatoes, and some carrots are ready. The mosquitoes are ready too. The gates to the garden have to be closed all the time now, as the chickens will not hesitate to destroy the tomatoes. Eggs from the hens are collected every evening, so they might be forgiven.
A neighboring farmer and friend has quietly slipped by and left us a bushel of sweet corn that you can see Cindy, Dol and Notley are shucking! After that it’s canning time, and corn shucks for the goats! Our daughter (and website creator!), son-in-law and children drop by to take their ‘harvest’ from the river. Dad is pulling in perch while the kids help Mom catch some crabs for dinner. Chicken and clam scraps are thrown in the river and the gulls come from out of nowhere for dinner.
The batch of wildflowers blooming beneath the flagpole will provide a harvest for the Golden Finches, sparrows and other tiny flying critters. Maybe some of the flowers can be used to decorate Wedding Ceremonies and Receptions here.
